Brown Island

Welcome

Brown Island is a private island, with a strong sense of "community", located across the bay from Friday Harbor and San Juan Island. The community consists of 60 waterfront lots which average about an acre each and afford a high degree of privacy. Interior areas of the island are commonly owned, densely wooded, and home to deer, many species of birds, and other wildlife.

In the Beginning

The property was platted in the early sixties and the homeowner's association dutifully enforces numerous development and use covenants that protect the forested beauty and peaceful nature of the Island. Boating is an important part of life on Brown Island. The community has its own marina for owners' and guests' boats. Moorage is free for owners' vessels (for the first 16 feet of overall length) and additional moorage is available at fair rates. The community also owns a dock and two parking lots for owners' cars and boat trailers on San Juan Island. An additional leased dock in the heart of Friday Harbor makes shopping and dining in Town convenient and easy, and also enables owners and their guests to walk on and off the ferry rather than waiting in the auto lines.

Getting Around

Owners' and guests' access to Brown Island is facilitated by the island's own private passenger ferry, Cove II. The boat trip to and from Town, whether by private boat or on the Cove II, is a great way to get a little exercise and out on the water. It only takes a few minutes but makes every day feel a bit special. The Island's caretakers, Jim and Hollie, manage the Island, run the ferry to Town daily, pick up the mail and generally make life easy for the residents. Former professional fire fighters and EMTs, they also provide community security and the assurance of a fast and knowledgable response in the event of an emergency.

The Benefits

The benefits of choosing Brown Island over the larger islands are endless. Community recreational assets include a swimming pool and cabana, sport court, and exercise room. The pool and weight room are great for both you and your guests, young or old. The sport court offers athletic diversions for the young at heart, with pickle ball and basketball being local favorites. No cars are allowed on the island, ensuring a relaxed pace and less noise. Many Islanders like to walk for exercise and paths winding through the commonly-owned areas are perfect for lazy strolls or fast powerwalks. Real estate prices tend to be a little lower on Brown Island than on San Juan at the moment. Waterfront properties with docks are at a premium on San Juan Island, but we currently have 1/2 acre waterfront property on Brown Island - with a shared dock - listed at $600,000. If quality of life and value for your dollar are high on your list then have your agent arrange an appointment with the Caretakers to take you over on "The Cove II".
